It seems only appropriate that Rockford Rescue Mission’s Volunteer of the Year for 2020 is a medical professional. Dr. Terry Buzzard, a physician and Regional Medical Director for Physicians Immediate Care, was honored Tuesday at the Mission for his significant help during the COVID-19 crisis. Terry and his family are part of First Free Rockford.

Terry, of Belvidere, has volunteered at the Mission for nearly 18 years, serving as one of two doctors who perform physical examinations for all incoming residents, plus periodic individual visits. During the pandemic, he has provided training for Mission staff, residents and guests regarding COVID safety and mitigation, vaccines and other related topics. He also helps develop policies and procedures for the Mission’s Hope Clinic. In 2019, he became Medical Director of Hope Clinic.

“Dr. Buzzard truly has helped guide us through the pandemic thus far,” said Mission CEO Sherry Pitney. “I have had so many residents and guests tell me they feel safe and cared for here. Terry has been a huge reason for that. We so appreciate his years of Christlike service.”

Terry was honored during a short ceremony recently at the Mission.

“This was completely unexpected, and I am so appreciative,” he said. “I also know that this has been a phenomenal group effort by everyone. It’s been challenging in many ways, but we have been truly blessed by not having any major COVID outbreaks and keeping everybody safe here.”

Physicians Immediate Care operates more than 20 clinics in Illinois and Indiana, including Rockford and throughout the Chicago area.
