Part 4: Colossians 2:16-23

 Life Group Questions:

  1. Think of the Uran family motto that Pastor Luke shared. How does that tie into who we are as Christians and keeping the “main thing, the main thing?”
  2. Read Colossians 2:16-17. How do we live a life not dictated by legalism but by the grace of God?
  3. How do we fight the shadows (the law)?
  4. What is the difference between judging and accountability?
  5. Read Colossians 2:18-19. What kinds of teachers are we to avoid? Have you ever been under the teaching of a false teacher? How did you handle it?
  6. Staying connected to the Head is how we avoid following false teachers. How can our group pray for you personally in your walk with God today?
  7. Read Paul’s warnings in Colossians 2:20-23. What are you following that has the appearance of wisdom but isn’t from God?
  8. In what way do you need to mature and get passed the elementary stage of your walk with God?
  9. How can we live a childlike faith and not a childish faith?
  10. How can you better center your identity on the person and work of Jesus?
  11. What shadows are you fighting that you need to surrender to Jesus?
  12. How can our group pray for you this week?

Sermon Notes and Scripture:

BECAUSE JESUS IS… WE DON’T, WE WON’T, AND WE AREN’T

  1. JESUS IS OUR REALITY, WE DON’T NEED TO FIGHT SHADOWS.

16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ. – Colossians 2:16-17

“The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves.” – Hebrews 10:1a

  1. JESUS IS THE HEAD, WE WON’T FOLLOW FALSE TEACHERS.

18 Do not let anyone who delights in false humility and the worship of angels disqualify you. Such a person also goes into great detail about what they have seen; they are puffed up with idle notions by their unspiritual mind. 19 They have lost connection with the head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow. – Colossians 2:18-19

  1. JESUS IS OUR REDEEMER, WE AREN’T ENSLAVED.

20 Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules: 21 “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”? 22 These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings. 23 Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence. – Colossians 2:20-23

CONCLUSION:

  1. JESUS IS OUR REALITY, WE DON’T NEED TO FIGHT SHADOWS.
  2. JESUS IS THE HEAD, WE WON’T FOLLOW FALSE TEACHERS.
  3. JESUS IS OUR REDEEMER, WE AREN’T ENSLAVED.
